History of Ruaha National Park
The history of Ruaha is deeply rooted in ancient traditions, conservation efforts, and natural evolution. The park takes its name from the Great Ruaha River, a vital lifeline running along its eastern border.
For centuries, the Hehe people and other local tribes lived near these landscapes, coexisting with wildlife and relying on the river for survival. During the early 20th century, explorers and conservationists recognized Ruaha’s ecological significance and began efforts to protect it.
Ruaha was first designated as a game reserve in 1910, later upgraded to national park status in 1964. In 2008, its boundaries expanded to more than double its size, making it Tanzania’s largest protected area.
Today, Ruaha forms part of a vast wilderness mosaic that includes wildlife corridors stretching into the Rungwa and Mbomipa areas, preserving one of the last strongholds of true African nature.
