Discover Nyerere National Park – Africa’s Last Great Wilderness

Welcome to Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest and most untouched wildlife sanctuaries. Covering over 30,000 km², this magnificent park was carved from the former Selous Game Reserve and stands today as one of Tanzania’s newest yet most spectacular protected areas.

Named in honor of Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the park is a masterpiece of natural beauty — from vast savannahs and open plains to dense woodlands, rolling hills, and winding river systems.

With the mighty Rufiji River forming the lifeblood of the ecosystem, Nyerere National Park offers unmatched boat safaris, walking expeditions, and traditional game drives, delivering an adventure that feels wild, exclusive, and deeply authentic.

✨ Explore the untouched magic of Nyerere with Safaris For Fun where every journey becomes a true African story.

History of Nyerere National Park

The origins of Nyerere National Park are rooted in conservation, heritage, and respect for wild nature. Originally part of the Selous Game Reserve, one of Africa’s oldest and largest protected areas, the region was recognized for its extraordinary ecological value as early as the 1800s.

The Selous was declared a protected area in 1896 and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to its rich biodiversity. In 2019, Tanzania officially designated a northern portion of the reserve as Nyerere National Park, named after the country’s first president — a visionary leader who championed conservation and national unity.

Today, the park represents the future of Tanzania’s southern safari circuit, offering modern protection, improved management, and world-class eco-tourism opportunities while preserving one of the wildest ecosystems in Africa.
